The Fastest Servers August 25, 2009

I’ve gotten quite a few clients asking me lately which server is the fastest to load their website. Here are the results, compiled from 5 tests of each node through iwebtool.com. I had hoped more tests would help eliminate ties, but we still had one in the end.
1) Node 7 – HighLayer (with 0.03 seconds average)
Test results were 0.04, 0.03, 0.03, 0.03, and 0.02.1) Node 6 – Nixism (with 0.03 seconds average)
Test results were 0.04, 0.02, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04.1) Node 1 – SmokyHosts (with 0.03 seconds average)
Test results were 0.04, 0.05, 0.02, 0.02, and 0.02.4) Node 3 – OSHS (with 0.046 seconds average)
Test results were 0.05, 0.05, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.04.5) Node 2 – Felweb (with 0.054 seconds average)
Test results were 0.07, 0.04, 0.04, 0.08, and 0.04.6) Node 5 – Addora (with 0.076 seconds average)
Test results were 0.06, 0.04, 0.21, 0.03, and 0.04.
As you can see, even among the fastest servers, there is still a great amount of fluctuation. We may repeat tests in the future, depending on demand for this type of knowledge.

Just received this:
Nixism Web Hosting Solutions has been acquired! The new Nixism group would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding. In the next few days, all clients will be moved to new top-of-the line hardware in LA, California. The clients will be moved via. live transfer. This means that every client will receive 0 downtime during the move.
Due to the nature of the move, every client will incur a IP change. Within a few days everyone should receive [their] IPs, and other information. We thank everyone for their patience.
This means, changes with the move will include:
- All current cPanel links will need to be updated to the new IP address. The update will happen automatically within your account, however any links already sent out in email will not work.
- If you are connecting with FTP via the IP, remember to adjust the IP address.
- Be ready for any problems that may arise with the transfer, and be sure to always keep a current backup of your data.
- We have yet to meet the new administration, and we sincerely hope they are just as nice as the last.
- The message also mentioned free upgrades, so there may be more space available for websites on this node.
The IP address will be made available to you via private message within the next few days, as soon as we have it ourselves.

Their motto is “Choose With Confidence”.
They offer “[s]ecure, [r]eliable, [a]nd [c]ustomer [f]riendly” hosting. And they sucked me in with 90% off the first month (normally $8.99). So I figured for a dollar I’d try it out for a month, and see.
Most everything was outdated, although I can’t complain as I never requested for anything to be new. I was having some problems with getting things working, (I mean aside from lack of time), and now I know why:
Dear Customer
We get firewall problem it disable Server Services
We will solved it soon
We are sorry about that
Well, I guess it’s back to the drawing board. Not to worry though. Many more where that came from.

It appears we have a problem with the monitoring on Node 2, which we should be resolving shortly. Due to a lack of data from this error, it has been omitted for this report. All other nodes are still included here.

I’ll bring your attention to some minor updates all around:
Node 1 – SmokyHosts
We’ve been upraded to have more storage and bandwidth for our original deal we signed with them back when all of IsMyWebsite was hosted on their server. The upgrade happened at the beginning of this month.
Node 2 – Felweb
PHPpgAdmin has been fixed to work on this server. Thanks to
Node 3 – OSHS
OSHS has grown considerably as a company, and is now required to pay VAT. They are shifting this cost to their customers, so our costs are increasing 15%.
Old Node 4 – GalaxyHost
Andrew is back home, so anyone who needs their old backups can get them. Let me or him know who you are.
Node 5 – Addora
The storage error was fixed. It appears backups were being created in the wrong place. We have ensured this company has monitoring in place to prevent any future problems.
Node 6 – Nixism
Nixism is still progressing on fixing Ruby On Rails to work on their server.
Node 7 – HighLayer
We recently majorly improved our deal with them, as mentioned in the last post.
Great Deal For Node 7 August 10, 2009

So, around August 5th, I get the following:
Due to several clients abusing our overselling option, we have decided to disable it. Your current plan (Layer 10), which has 5GB Space/50GB Bandwidth will be increased to 10GB Space/100GB Bandwidth.
Therefore, we request that you limit your clients allocated space/bandwidth so that it does not surpass the 10GB Space/100GB Bandwidth that you have been allocated. Once you have completed this task, please contact us. We will then disable the overselling option for your account. We hope that you will cooperate with us during this process.
As expected, we were one of the clients exceeding our allotment and ‘abusing’ their service, in fact using twice what we were allowed. Most of it, however, developed from the rapid growth of one website within our service.
Steven, on their support channel, was very helpful to resolve this issue, and we finally cracked a deal whereby we now have access to double the storage and bandwidth, and overselling, with an upgrade to get yet another doubling of the storage and bandwidth.
So our capacity has quadrupled for a small cost of $10.00, and we have kept our relations with this excellent Canadian hosting company HighLayer through an exclusive deal. Just another way to make the most of what we have.
August Donation Goal August 9, 2009

For the past 9 months since we relaunched last November, I have been shouldering all the costs of keeping this hosting online and fully operational. The cost is hundreds of dollars a month, leaving me thousands in the red. I typically work 10 hours a day, 7 days a week so that I can afford to do this.
I do this because I believe in this hosting and the enourmous impact it has enabled in the world. It is truly amazing to be a part of so many new projects, to be the one who enables them to happen each and every day. So many people have come through our gates and left as leaders.
This month I am setting a simple goal to raise $100.00 in donations, that will all go towards the servers, covering a fraction of their costs. Any extra will go towards next month’s goal of $200.00. Although one-time donations are appreciated, my main goal is to gain some monthly donors, permanently increasing the sustenance and growth of this website.
Meeting these goals not only means we have more to work with and can expand and improve this hosting to better meet your needs, it also means more time is available to help with the client experience, and we look more solid as a community. More time would be available to help with updates, like getting a team together, finally finishing the advertising system, fixing up the website review system, and more.
Basically, meeing this first goal is the key to getting back on track, offering the best possible service, and making the difference we all want to make. All I ask is, give what you can afford to give. It could be $5.00, $10.00, $20.00. Even $1.00 helps. Even better is to commit monthly, so you will know you are always doing your part.
As a donor, your contribution is recognized on the wall. You gain worldwide recognition and make a huge impact on thousands of lives. The record for the largest donation we’ve received is $190.00, and it’s since been matched twice, but not beaten. With many other organizations, your money will pay wages and facility costs. With us, it all goes straight into the servers, which are employed with special low-cost deals with only the best specially-selected hosting companies. Nothing is wasted.
