Hello IsMyWebsite users. I had been put in charge of creating a temporary layout for the website and here is what it looks like:

It’s very basic and simple. I know that is not the most amazing thing out there, but it’s a nice step onto making IMW a great website again, and I really hope you like it.

That’s a whole lot better than what it was. Btw, we are going for a simple and basic design. 😉
Only one suggestion…how about changing this statement
“We are currently recovering from a devastating hacker. At this time you are encouraged to remain actively checking the blog and download our toolbar.”
to this
“Our service is currently recovering from the results of a devastating attack by a hacker. During this time of recovery, we encourage you to check out our blog and our toolbar.”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Do you wanna scare people?
I don’t think this idea is such a good one, because of the mention of a hacker, I know that if I was a new user looking for a freehost like IMW, and I saw that the host I was about to try was attacked by a hacker, I would not want to risk my site on that host, don’t mention a hacker, just say that the server went down and that is all, maybe a bit of a white lie, but it will save your potential customers!

I like it but do you have a higher quality image for the banner? I can see some noise around the text.

4. pvcsnathan - May 3, 2008

One question I forgot to ask…Andrius, are you also in charge of creating the theme for the rest of the site?

5. Andrius - May 3, 2008

Well, about a theme for the entire site, we haven’t talked about it, but I think that I could do it if asked for it.

6. pvcsnathan - May 3, 2008

Ok, just to let you know there’s already a theme for the forum that you’d probably be forced to model of off if you did choose to do so.

7. Cain - May 4, 2008

As long as IMW is using phpbb coding the forum to fit the site’s layout won’t be hard at all. I definetly like this layout better than the old one but its still a bit plain. Oh and a must is to change that banner from being so pixelly.

Great layout – like it nice and simple. I think it should be kept like this even when the sites all back up and running – not that we’ll probably have to think about that for a year or so yet, the way things are going! Oh, and I agree about not puttin the thing about getting hacked online, that definatly WILL scare people off.

Why not first put all energy in getting things back online and then, when everything is up and running, talking about new themes, and other stuff?
A lot of us are waiting for the moment we can put our stuff back online I guess, and I think it is less important how the design is at that moment.
For longer term ofcourse this should be well discussed and made as userfriendly, and good looking as possible.

@ ForGeeks:

All the energy is put onto getting the server data up and running, is just that I was asked for a little theme for the site until it is up again, and I did it.

I am also looking forward to get my site (www.tupalm.net) back, but I understand this things can’t be done instantaneously, so all I can do is wait : ( .

I mentioned the hacker because really any downtime is unacceptable, and I’d rather have downtime caused by something I can’t control than something that could happen again.

Essentially, all measures have been taken to secure the server against future attacks and we are fanning out into multiple services so the hacker can only take down one server at a time! To take us down again he needs an account on every server and another exploit.

12. J,R,D, Ltd - May 5, 2008

Did the hacker actually have an account that he used for the exploit?

13. ForGeeks - May 6, 2008

I hope that securing the servers, what is a good, in fact essential thing, will not result in less functionality in for example php coding or other things.
I think it would be wise too to let users accept a clausule where they can made (financially) responsible for things like downtime because of hacking. The point then is ofcourse what can be pointed as hacking or for example stupid mistakes, bad coding etc….
But, possibly this can be a way too to prevent further hacking actions of users from the inside…
