I just finished talking with Skylar from Crissic Solutions, the company behind our 8th node. There were two phases to this deal. The first:

  1. They are willing to donate $2/mo off our bill to get their name up on the IsMyWall.
  2. They want us to help design banners for their site through a competition. They are willing to provide free Standard Resellers to the winners for a year. They are also willing to upgrade us to the Standard Master Reseller in exchange for our efforts here.

So, anyone with graphical skills can start thinking of what they will be designing. We are going to need banners in 88×31 and 125×125 dimensions. What does everyone think of this? More information as it comes…

“Sir, we have temporarily moved all the old backups of your account to a remote storage so as to give a stable server to the rest of the customers before again restoring your accounts.

We will then be moving all your accounts to a different server than the one where other customers are hosted.

All this will be completed in the next 2 to 3 days time, and once that is done, you will again be able to see all your accounts.

At this instant, all you will be getting is your (and your members) data of the 8th of April 2008, coz the infected server has now finally be disconnected and there is no more access to the infected data.”

From this, it looks like there will be a permanent loss of 17 days worth of data. (April 8th – April 25th) In addition, SmokyHosts has moved us to a different server which may mean better uptime as we will be sharing with less accounts.

There is a tough decision at this point to either:

  1. Move back onto their service, but keep new accounts on separate resellers. This is the easiest plan, but may not be the safest.
  2. Use their service as one of the ‘nodes’ in our new plan (see the last post). This would involve changing all the domain names.
  3. Over the next month and a half, transfer all data from their service through out the other nodes and terminate our account with them.

You can debate this. (And don’t worry – there’s plenty of time since we’re all waiting for SmokyHosts.)

At this point, no further word from SmokyHosts about any progress. In an effort to bring the site back online I have purchased paid hosting with SurfWebHost which will redirect to this blog for the time being.

The plan I purchased comes with a guaranteed 99.9% uptime and unlimited subdomains. I have talked to one of the owners of the company to ensure they will allow us to utilize those subdomains as a redirection to accounts hosted elsewhere.

Once the main website has been re-established, we can start creation of new websites on ‘nodes’ – reseller accounts which will each hold a selection of client websites on a similar domain. (IsMyWs, IsNumberOne, and a growing number of others.)

The advantages of this setup include:

  • No dependance on any one company or server to maintain the site.
  • Should one of our ‘nodes’ go down, the others will remain up and, more importantly, we will still be able to communicate with the client.
  • Each ‘node’ can have individual management, without revealing any of the main website code, client passwords, or potential threats to the main website.
  • This setup allows clients upgraded to resellers or with their own servers to host certain clients without sacrifice to everyone else. (Of course we will be only allowing select clients this privelege.)
  • Should the main site go down, everyone’s websites will still be safe (minus the redirection).
  • Hosting the database and main site on another server is a separate layer of security from hackers.
  • Our more trusted clients can be hosted on more reliable servers to keep them away from the new clients who could potentially cause damage.

For the time being, I am still waiting for the domain to propagate and slowly reconstructing the site starting this weekend.
